Selwyn Figueras

Call Me

Selwyn rejoined the Firm in April 2008 after a short stint in the employed bar, having practised with the firm between October 2003 to December 2005. Selwyn's practice spans a number of fields with a decidedly commercial slant. He has headed up the firm's Business Development Team since returning to the firm, developing a network of strong links with the legal profession in London, Zurich and Geneva, coordinating all other aspects of the firm's marketing and managing the firm's PR.

A Member of the Gibraltar Parliament between December 2011 and October 2015 with Shadow responsibility for Justice, Planning, Traffic and Transport, Selwyn contributed to the passing of substantial legislation in the Companies and financial services context, as well as in relation to the Proceeds of Crime Act 2015, which he championed during his time in Parliament.

He heads up the team's Brexit consultancy, established recently in response to demands from clients and partners looking for insight and practical advice in respect of the potentially very significant impact of Brexit on businesses and individuals linked to Gibraltar, whether by business, employment or family.

What is Selwyn up to these days

Focusing on all developments on the Brexit front, Selwyn heads up the Brexit Consultancy set up by ISOLAS to assist clients in understanding the issues around the United Kingdom's imminent departure from the European Union.

"Context is key – understanding, for example, that the historical rejection of the Withdrawal Agreement by 230 votes in Parliament in January 2019 was, despite its significance, superficial in that it was only really rejected over a disagreement in relation to the Irish Backstop, is a matter that legitimately leads to a sense that, if red lines on that issue can somehow be softened (even if that is currently a distant prospect), the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement in respect of everything else are still as instructive today as they were at the end of November."

Selwyn currently spends a lot of his time in London.  With the development of the jurisdiction as a conduit for business into the UK post-Brexit as well as a centre for excellence in the growing fintech space, Selwyn continues to take the message of everything Gibraltar has to offer as a modern specialist finance centre to new centres such as Tel Aviv, New York and Asia, as he explores the new opportunities opening up to the jurisdiction.

Elected to the Gibraltar Parliament at a general election held on the 8th December 2011. Selwyn was a member of the elected opposition in the Gibraltar as part of the Gibraltar Social Democrats.
