The Isolas sponsored rugby sevens team ‘Pillars of Hercules’ (P.O.H) launched their inaugural season this year competing in the Gibraltar sevens tournament, as well as the International Puerto Santa Maria 7’s tournament.
Strong performances in the Gibraltar tournament with some lovely flowing rugby, and four consecutive victories brought P.O.H into a fiercely contested final against Puerto Santa Maria, a top Spanish division side who P.O.H had beaten earlier in the day. Unfortunately the Gibraltar team went down 12-7 finishing as runners up.
The Puerto tournament was the next stop on the circuit with a strengthened team which included All Black Justin Marshall, and England International Iain Balshaw as coaches. P.O.H defeated the Andalucia Selection, and Alcobendas, a Spanish Division de Honor team, to qualify top of their group. In the next stage they came up against the Viator Barbarians which included a few players from the Spanish National Team. In definitely the best game of the day P.O.H came out on top 17-7 and went on to face Cau Valencia who were swept aside in the Semi Final. The final took place between P.O.H and Viator Barbarians in a replay of the earlier match. However, early injuries to key players cost the team dear, and P.O.H finished the tournament as runners up.
The next tournament for P.O.H will be the New York Sevens in November where they will be representing Gibraltar at the event.
All in all a great effort with some excellent results along the way and Isolas have been delighted to be involved in the sponsorship of the team.
