Gerald John Olivero, a local teacher, yesterday completed a 25km swim from Tarifa to cross the Straits of Gibraltar in a time of five hours and sixteen minutes, despite the difficult wind conditions and the presence of a school of jellyfish which threatened to put an end to his attempt.

Conditions out at sea forced the 46 year old to take 'the long way' across the Straits from Tarifa Island to Bullones, Punta Leona, on the Spanish Isla del Perejil.

Witnesses claim that Olivero was stung on a number of occasions as he swam through the school of jellyfish early in the swim but, despite the threat of injury, he pushed on, undeterred, and arrived safely in the company of dolphins and pilot whales.
